For almost a month now, a Frenchman has stolen my heart.

Now this isn’t me outing myself and some new love affair, the Kiwi is still very much on the scene, pottering about with his fishing rods and throwing an egg around on the weekend. In fact, the Kiwi too is having a love affair with the same Frenchman: His name is Claude.

Getting a puppy

For a while now, the Kiwi and I have been desperate to share our lives (and sofa) with a pet pup. We’re both sickeningly soppy animal lovers but, until now, we’ve never been able to offer the right environment for a dog. We’ve followed the Kiwi’s rugby career from Australia to Germany, back to the UK and have lived in high-rises and have travelled. Lots! Furthermore, as previous dog owners, whilst we know how much joy they can bring, we’re also very aware of how much restriction owning a dog can have on your lives and so, until now, we’ve only admired from afar.

This year however, things in the Kiwi In Kernow household have changed. We have stability now. The Kiwi and I are both doing well in work and have a lovely home in Cornwall, tucked up in the woods on the West Coast. The Kiwi’s rugby career affords him short working hours during the day and going professional means we have more structure. In short, the above paragraph = dog.

Claude: The French Bulldog

..And so Claude arrived home with us in April and we haven’t regretted anything since! He’s a fawn French Bulldog and spends his afternoons roaming the beaches of West Cornwall, eating anything he can snuffle up and chewing on dried kelp. Sure, he has completely monopolised our spare time, but we couldn’t imaging wanting to spend our time on anything else now.

Now, all of this gushing has a point! We’re hoping that our new addition will mean something relevant to you as well. The seasonal dog bans that plague Cornwall will add a new angle to this blog and, as we discover new little pup hangouts, we’ll be sharing them on Kiwi In Kernow so you too can enjoy Cornwall avec chien.

Feel free to ask questions if you’re unsure of the breed (more information on French Bulldogs can be found on the Kennel Club website here) or, if you too are wondering whether it’s the right time for you to get a puppy. You can chat to us in the comments below or feel free to get in touch with us via our Twitter or Instagram.

We could not have little Claude in our lives if it wasn’t for the ongoing support and Claudey love of our families so, if you’re reading this, we love you!
